Subject: Clicks in patches, using filters in GoldWave
I used GoldWave's Expression Evaluator to create a pure sine wave, using
the formula sin(2*pi*66.551*t), and it was then converted into a patch using
Patch Maker Lite. When a add a loop to it it sounds fine, all I ever wanted
it to be: a bass patch. Just one problem, there is an annoyong click at the
start when the patch is played, and another annoying click at the end.
I can get rid of the click at the end by selecting the 'reduce volume
quickly while note is turned off' envelope option. Does anybody know how to
get rid of the click at the begginning?
In GoldWave.wri, an example of a low-pass filter is given, but there is no
mention of any other filters like a high-pass filter. Does anyonbody know
the formulae for any other filters or effects that I can add to a sample
using the expression evaluator?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you're using version 0.99 (aka 1.0) of DOOM, you'll need to get
dmxgus.ini from Epas or copy ultramid.ini to dmxgus.ini in your DOOM
directory. If you have version 1.1, then you don't need to do this.
However, for both versions, you need to set your GUS IRQs to lines
less than 8. For example, I set my GUS IRQs to 5 (GF1) and 7 (SB/MIDI)
for DOOM. You can make a batch file to automate this for you:
set ultrasnd=220,7,7,5,7 ; My settings -- use your own if they differ
ultrinit
doom.exe
set ultrasnd=220,7,7,12,5 ; My normal GUS settings
ultrinit
You need to use IRQs less than 8 because the DOS extender that DOOM
uses does not support the high IRQs.

I think, since you're in the US, that you're supposed to send your card
to Gravis' US dist. centre:
1790 Midway Lane
Bellingham, WA
USA 98226
I'm not sure about that, so check your manual to see where you're supposed
to send your card. The change of addressed occurred over a year ago, so
if your GUS package is fairly recent (has a 3.4 GUS or 2.06 disks), then
the addresses found within it should be up-to-date.

You can get the new Windows drivers in pmak110.zip, which is on
archive.epas.utoronto.ca in the /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit directory.
The newest Mega-Em can be found in /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit/gravis.bbs
as megem202.zip.
The newest Patch Man is version 1.07 (I think) -- a new one hasn't been
released recently.
The new mixer is included with the new Windows drivers in pmak110.zip,
which, incidentally, is Patch Maker Lite, a patch making utility for
the GUS.

Has anyone been able to get Indycar racing (papyrus publ.) to work with
the gus? It has both 32bit and normal AIL drivers. It locks up with sbos
(2.08 I think: whatever came on the 2.06a disks) Also in the installation
section it says "adlib/sb reqd. to hear engine noise" This seems to me to
mean that it uses FM sysnthesis for engine noise therfore it won't work
with the gus, even with AIL drviers.

When is Gravis going to start releasing Mega-Em on their distribution disks?
They're big time shooting themselves in the foot until they do so. You'd
think that with the official 2.02 release, and Gravis buying Mega-Em they'd
do it already.

Subject: GUS Mixer - Windoze
I just recently installed the new windoze drivers (I know, I'm lazy...),
and can get everything to work (i.e. no probs with midi/patches etc.).
However, I'm having a problem with the GUS mixer now. Everytime I start
up, the volumes are low - the .wavs and the midi are way too quiet, and the
right midi channel is totally silenced - so I have to go into the mixer
and adjust the volumes. I was under the impression that windoze was
supposed to save everything upon exit, so why won't it record the volume
levels and keep them constant? What can I do to keep the volumes the
same?
Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you vey much!

Subject: lock-up and unending noise
I've had my GUS for a while now, and I think I've gotten all the kinks
worked out, except one rather thorny one. Occasionally, when playing a
game (most notably X Wing, RTZ), my machine will lock up solid (requiring
hard boot) and the GUS will give me a lovely rendition of all of its
patches, cyclically and unceasingly, until my computer's reboot
re-initializes the card.
This happens most frequently when running mega-em; for instance, it always
happens in one particular spot in X Wing when running mega-em, but does
not happen in that spot if I'm using SBOS.
In RTZ, I'm using Ultramid, etc., and the problem seems to happen after
I've saved my game. I have a suspicion that I may be conflicting with my
hard drive in some way, here, because it most often locks up if I try to
move too soon after I've saved, and not given the disk caching enough time
to finish what it's doing. I can't tell if I have a DMA conflict with my
hard drive, because I don't know how to find out what DMA my hard drive is
using; setup won't tell me, and I can't find a utility that will either
(apparently it's usually "1", but I can't tell for sure).
So, sorry for the length of this post, but I would really like to solve
this problem, and feel sure that someone here can help me. Thanks.

I know that it comes with Ultramid, and you can select GUS from the
DIGI-PAK testing module.. BUT
DIGI-PAK can't seem to find its .SND file.
The ultramid that comes with it doesn't run because it can't find the
$ULTRAMID/midi files or something to that effect.
When I use ultramid from Rampage, and then load the digipak driver,
erything works, except there is no sound in MW2. Does this have anything
to do with the fact that the GUS is not in the install programs soundcard
menu?

I don't know of any software that supports MIDI sample dumps to/from the ASR
10, but they are painfully slow anyway, so you probably don't want to do this.
I think the program EPSDISK supports the ASR-10 in some way. It allows you
to transfer data to/from EPS/EPS-16+ disks using your standard PC 3.5" drive
you can get it from ftp.reed.edu. I'm sorry I don't know exactly where it
is. There is also a mailing list for EPS/EPS-16/ASR10 owners that you can
subscribe to. There is probably some info on it on ftp.reed.edu as well.
(I'm subscribed, but I don't have the address handy - there are some others
on this list who are there too, so maybe one of them can fill you in).

Subject: EPAS cleanup proposal
Since I remember seeing something about low HD space on Epas, I think we
should have some "restrictions" on files that should be kept there. Since
Epas is a GUS specific ftp archive maybe we could remove the doom zips and
any other games that can also be gotten from other ftp sites (uml, uwp,
wuarchive, ...), regular MODS & 669S, and non-GUS-specific MIDI files (since
there must be other sites that cover MIDI-files, MODS and 669S too).
This way there'll be more free space for GUS-specific games/game-patches,
utils, etc.
Just a proposal

Subject: FAQ entry for DRAM question
Perhaps the following entry could be added to the GUS faq. Sure, it's
not exactly GUS related, but it seems to be a common question.
WHY DO I NEED TWICE AS MANY 256k RAM CHIPS AS I THINK I SHOULD?
The DRAMs that you use to upgrade the GUS are 256x4 [1] chips. This
means that each chip has (roughly [2]) 256-thousand, four bit memory
locations. Since a byte is eight bits, you need two chips to make up
the full 256k [3] of memory. You can usually identify these chips by
the sequence "4256" somewhere in the identification number printed on
top of them.
Footnotes:
[1] This is spoken as "two-fifty-six by four"
[2] The pseudo-unit "k" is taken from the metric system modifier "kilo",
which means 1000. In computer usage, however, it actually means
1024 (two to the power of ten, 2^10), so 256kB is actually 256x1024
bytes.
[3] Note that "k" is lowercase -- it is technically incorrect to use
"K". Also, when referring to bits, "b" is used, and when referring
to bytes, "B". For example, each 256x4 chip is 4b wide, and two of
them make up 256kB of memory.

The 2.06a has two MOD players, as I recall. Ultramod, and GUSMOD. Anyway,
neither one of these are very good compared to the new players that have
come out since they were programmed. My favourites so far are Wildcat's
Metal, Future Crew's MDP, and Inertia Player (I forget by whom). Metal
and MDP are about tied in my books for sound quality (but Metal does
surround sound whereas MDP does not), while Inertia Player has the prettiest
front-end (although it requires you to run a player like Metal or MDP
first or else it will just lock up).

The GUS' 32 bit drivers for games that use DOS4GW are very close to
completion (the AIL drivers first, followed, hopefully soon, by the
Sierra drivers). GUS owners need not feel left behind by games that
have moved to protected mode.
BTW, most games that use DOS4GW should still work with SBOS if your
motherboard's NMI is working.

Remember that the new ultrasnd.ini file has many banks, and you have
to edit the bank that Mega-Em looks at for its patches. You can cover
your bases by editing all the banks so that patch 127 becomes pistol2
(you appear to have done this).
However, also make sure that you're editing the copy in \audio\ultrasnd,
not \audio\ultrasnd\windows.

The foundations for multiple banks are just being laid. There isn't
a convenient method of using the multiple banks just yet.

Miles (aka AIL) drivers are used by many games to produce music and
sound effects without worrying about the actual soundcard hardware.
They're sort of like Windows drivers -- once you have Windows drivers
for your soundcard, any app that uses the Windows MCI interface will
work on it. Similarly, once you install the GUS AIL drivers into a
game that uses the AIL system, that game will then support the GUS.
Sierra drivers are like Miles drivers, but are used by Sierra games
only. Same concepts and all.
Mega-Em is an _emulator_. It fools software into thinking that you
have a Roland MT-32 or SCC-1 and an SB in your machine. Then, when
the game tries to use these devices that it sees, Mega-Em intercepts
the port accesses and controls the GUS accordingly. What this means
is that you don't need to modify a game to add GUS support (AIL and
Sierra drivers require that you install them into the games that
you want to add GUS support to). However, because Mega-Em requires
that it be in control of protected mode (to have a vantage point from
which it can trap the port accesses to the virtual Roland and SB),
games that themselves enter protected mode render Mega-Em inactive.
SBOS is also an emulator, but it uses hardware on the GUS to trap
port accesses without relying on protected mode. However, this
hardware assistance requires a working NMI (to be 100% compliant
with the ISA specs, a motherboard must have the NMI enabled),
which some MB manufacturers have decided not to implement.
In terms of sound quality, AIL/Sierra drivers have the best, followed
by Mega-Em, and then SBOS. Soon, we'll also have AIL32 drivers to
play with. :)

Subject: MechWarrior II _will_ have GUS support!!
I just pulled down the demo for MechWarrior II and, while I haven't gotten
to play it yet (I'm at work :( the demo at least includes GUS support
through UltraMid. (You shoulda heard me cheer when I saw teh GF1MIDI file :)
The demo is mw2demo.zip on ftp.uwp.edu in the /pub/incoming/games directory
as of Sat morning. I don't know when the file will get moved to a regular
directory, but I thought y'all would like to know.

How long does Gravis people take to fix something and send it back? I sent in
my GUS about a month ago and haven't heard anything since then. and the GUS
people still haven't contact me or reply my email. Is it just me or do they
have terrible customer service?

Subject: Terminator 2029
Hello there!
I am having trouble configuring the GUS sound for T2029. The
Roland music and SB sound effects last for a little while but they
soon cut out once you're into the game...any suggestions as to how I
can rectify this problem?
I am currently using the new version of MegaEm and choosing
Roland Sound Canvas and SoundBlaster as my sound cards when I setup
T2029.
Any help would be appreciated!

Subject: Voice Recognition - Windows Sound System 2?
Hi everyone,
I'm interested in getting a Voice Recognition package for my
GUS as well. Yesterday saw a discussion of Voice Assist which
works fine with the GUS. How about the new Microsoft Sound System
2.0? For those who don't know, MSS 2.0 is software with separate
hardware option. Microphone designed for noisy environments is
included. Can anyone comment on this product? Is the Voice
Recognition software good? Also, is the provided microphone the
type that works with the GUS?
Thanks!
